Language- a symbolic system in which meanings are communicated by speech. Speech- a pattern of movements of the speech organs, patterns of acoustic vibrations. Dialect- different usage patterns with in a language. Speech community- a group of people who live within the same geographical boundaries and use the same language. Idiolect- a form of speech that distinguishes each of us as individuals. Phonemics- the study of units of sound that distinguish between morphemes. Distinguish between a dictionary and a lexicon: dictionary- comprised of words in a given language, lexicon- comprised of morphemes in a given language. Morpheme- the smallest unit of language that carries a semantic interpretation. Phoneme- a basic sound segment that has the linguistic function of distinguishing morphemes. Minimal contrast- contrasts between two morphemes that differ in only. Various pronunciations of particular phonemes one sound segment: complementary distribution- says the same phoneme in two ways because of the phonetic environment.
