PSY 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Psy, Neurotransmitter Receptor, Procedural Memory
Document Summary
Not isolated in files but overlapping neural networks distributed throughout brain. Long term memory storage doesn"t get full. Retrieval and use of explicit memories directed by frontal lobes. Encoding and storage of explicit memories is facilitated by the hippocampus, facts and events held there for a couple of days before consolidating (moving to other parts of the brain for long term storage) Good nights sleep improves recall of previous days events by facilitating transfer of memories from hippocampus cerebral cortex. Cerebellum forms and stores our conditioned responses, can store a phobic. Basil ganglia controls movement and forms/stores procedural memory and response even if we can"t recall how we acquired the fear motor skills. Implicit memories from infancy can we retained. Explicit memories only go back to about 3 for most people. Encoding memories were not stored well because the hippocampus is one of the last brain areas to develop.
