PSY 245 Lecture Notes - Lecture 28: Mental Disorder, Stage Fright, Paraphilia
Document Summary
Recurrent or persistent genital pain associated with sexual intercourse in a male or female. The symptoms are significantly more common in women than in men. The disturbance causes marked distress or interpersonal problems. Dyspareunia (meaning unhappily mated as bedfellow ) refers to pain during intercourse in the context of sexual desire and an ability to attain arousal and orgasm. Dyspareunia is diagnosed only if no medical reasons for pain can be found. Vaginismus is a female condition whereby the outer third of the vagina undergoes involuntary spasms when sexual intercourse is attempted, which in turn, interferes with intercourse. Common sensations include ripping, burning, or tearing during intercourse. Alcohol and other drugs of abuse (e. g. , cocaine, heroin) also can produce widespread sexual dysfunction in users and abusers. Social disinhibition from alcohol may promote the myth that alcohol facilitates sexual arousal and behavior. but alcohol is a nervous system depressant/depressant.
