New batches of works of intellectual property published in 1923 get released into the public domain beginning this year. In 1998, congress froze the copyright protections for all creative works made between 1923 and 1977, essentially giving them 20 extra years of copyright protection this year that extension runs out. Beneficial: allows creators to make money; protects works from thievery. A pain: makes it difficult to use other works for inspiration.
