Colonists fear of post-british actions (paying off debt) Colonists aren"t anti tax( taxation without representation is what bothers them) Stamp act (1765) in order to use official documentation must use watermark paper which is a stamp and it is taxed. Colonists upset british parliament imposing how to do things -> imminent end to self autonomous rule. Resist and rebellion: stamp act repealed but replaced with different taxes. Not the taxes that were bothersome tbh. Colonists not given elected representation in parliament. 1773 mere resistance turns rebellious (boston tea party)-> intolerable coercive acts -> intended to punish massachusetts and show britain"s might. Quasi-military rule: in boston to set example. Colonies sorta unite (2nd continental congress) 1775. Decided that relationship with britain is over (independant) Create continental army ( george washington as leader)
