Rich in collagen: called osteocytes when surrounded by bony matrix. Maintain bone tissue: calcification of bone occurs when hydroxyapatite is deposited into the osteoid matrix. Osteoclasts responsible for resorption/removal of bone tissue. Osteoblasts and osteoclasts work together for the remodeling/reshaping of bone: osteoclasts remove bone tissue, osteoblasts build bone tissue, bone deposition and resorption allow bones to change size and shape during growth. In construction there are two types of workers: builders (osteoblast) and demolition guys (osteoclasts, both have important jobs but never the two shall meet.
