Baker | fors 3331 | spring 2017 | lecture 3 | page 1. Ontogeny the branch of biology that deals with ontogenesis: ontogenesis - the development of an individual organism or anatomical or behavioral feature from the earliest stage to maturity) Osteoblasts bone-forming cells that synthesize and deposit bone material: often just beneath the periosteum, make osteoid (pre-bone) tissue. Rich in collagen: called osteocytes when surrounded by bony matrix. Maintain bone tissue: calcification of bone occurs when hydroxyapatite is deposited into the osteoid matrix. Osteoclasts responsible for resorption/removal of bone tissue. Osteoblasts and osteoclasts work together for the remodeling/reshaping of bone: osteoclasts remove bone tissue, osteoblasts build bone tissue, bone deposition and resorption allow bones to change size and shape during growth. In construction there are two types of workers: builders (osteoblast) and demolition guys (osteoclasts, both have important jobs but never the two shall meet.
