Spend most of life cycle as multinucleate mass of streaming protoplasm. Massive cytoplasm with a lot of nuclei inside. Soredia: a unit of algal cell wrapped in fungal hyphae. Can break off from the entire organism together. The mycorrhizal condition is the normal state for most plants. A type of association between fungi and plant roots. Plants do much better in the presence of mycorrhizal fungal associate. Trees without endophytes were more vulnerable to pathogens. Some have enzymatic ability to break down highly resistant components. 30% of fungal species are parasites or pathogens. Harmful mainly when fungi is introduced to a non-native environment. Infects ant, ant climbs up stem, dies and stays there. Fungi sprouts from ant body and disperses spores that way. Photosynthetic organisms occur in 4 out of 5 supergroups (major clades) of eukaryotes. How did photosynthesis develop in so many lineages? the cell of another. Not all new eukaryotic cells did this, but some did.
