BIOLOGY 1B Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Sporophyll, Zygote, Gnetum
Document Summary
Gametophyte is dominant in land plants, which include bryophytes. These plants have xylem and phloem that are the pipes for these plants. Lycophytes have a single-stranded leaf with simple vasculature. 3 major groups: common ferns, horsetail ferns have silica (good for brushing and scrubbing, whisk ferns lack leaves and roots (mostly stem) Ferns and allies ferns and their close relatives. If the fire isn"t so bad, it"ll only burn the top part; ferns have their roots deeply planted into the ground so they can just grow back after the fire. Haplodiplontic life cycle and makes spores through meiosis. Gametophyte matures and produces sperm and eggs in archegonia. Spores germinate and divide by mitosis and create gametophyte and antheridia. Embryophytes is protected once its derived from zygote. Embryo grows on gametophyte (both of these are photosynthetic) Each can carry on their own lives, but gametophyte is small and irrelevant.
