Steel framed buildings survived while wood/brick buildings collapsed/burned. 1838- san andreas fault epicenter near san mateo (smaller) 1865, october 8th- san andreas fault epicenter near santa cruz. 1868, october 22nd- hayward fault epicenter near hayward. Six great fires destroyed much of the city during the early gold rush (1849-1851) Brick buildings become popular and the fire department becomes much more effi- cient and no more great fires happened. Complacency grew then the 1906 earthquake and fire struck. Refugee shelters of u. s. army tents with 400,000 people displaced. Prof. andrew lawson (turning point for earthquake science) The lawson report: cataloged descriptions of earthquake effects, identified the san andreas fault, maps of the fault location and ground shaking distribution. 4/26/16: elastic rebound theory- stress builds until fault ruptures causing earthquake. Mapped the san andreas fault by following a crack in the land that appeared after the 1906 quake. Mapped ground shaking by studying building damage and talking to people.
