Amount of time without earthquakes on a fault. Can be on a whole fault or on a speci c part of a fault. When one segment on a fault slips it makes the next more section of fault to fail. Been through cycles before (in the other direction) Extensive records back to before 1000 ad from constantinople. Usgs in 1985 predicted an earthquake in park eld for 1988 +- 5 years. Did not happen until, sep. 28th, 2004. The usgs put down forecast instrumentation around the fault in hopes that they could observe an early warning before the earthquake (no precursory signals observed before earthquake) Lack of seismic activity in an area with previous seismicity means there will be an earthquake here but we don"t know when! Ghost forests: living coastal forest, land level drops, tidewater drowns tree roots, tidal mud accumulates and trees can grow again.
