His father had a deep-seated hatred for white people. Antinomian -- two opposed modes of thoughts that verge towards same logical conclusion. Narrator is tasked by dying mother & looking after sonny. Story of two brothers at crossroads but not able to communicate message to each other. Story opens in middle of day about sonny"s arrest. Narrator presumes to not understand sonny"s music. Sonny isn"t a man of words--he"s a man of music. Active listening or act of hearing music plays important role later on. Symbol, image, dialogue, passage or scene that recurs in a story or poem.
