Document Summary

A framework for thinking ethically -- markkula center for applied ethics. Ethics: standards of behavior that tell us how humans ought to act in many situations in which they find themselves--as friends, parents, children, citizens, businesspeople, teachers, professionals, etc. Feelings provide important info for our ethical choices. Some have developed habits that make them feel bad when they do something wrong, but many feel good even though they are doing something wrong. Feelings often tell us if it"s uncomfortable to do right thing if it"s hard. Most religions advocate high ethical standards but sometimes don"t address all types of problems we face. Good system of law incorporates many ethical standards, but law can deviate from what"s ethical. Law can be a function of power alone & designed to serve interests of narrow groups. Law may have difficult time designing or enforcing standards in some areas & may be slow to address new problems.
