Skeletons of dinosaurs & early mammals were identified as remains of celestial dragons who brought rain & provided water. Legend was a way of explaining mysterious fossils of unfamiliar animals. Middle ages: caves with fossils of huge ice age cave bears were fabled to be the dens of dragons. Names based off fossil finds exist throughout us and canada. Some are translations of earlier native american names. Often geological markers but also referred to conspicuous features of topography.
