September 1, 1939: gmy invades poland (breaking the molotov-ribbentrop pact) Roosevelt wanted to get involved and give military aid, but us isolation prevails. Neutrality acts: congress said that gov"t couldn"t sell war goods to combattants. November 1939: cash & carry plan (gets around neutrality acts) Allows sale of materiel to belligerents, but they have to come get it. October 1939: jewish refugee (einstein) met with fdr told him that gmy was working on using the atom to make power. Manhattan project: secret project to create the atom bomb (wanted to get it before gmy) The war was not going well for the allies. Unlike in ww1, now offense has the advantage new technology. The effectiveness of the german blitzkrieg is proof: the maginot line fell within days. June 1940: france asks fdr to come to its aid. By the end of june, gmy had occupied france. With or without the atom bomb, gmy would be a threat to us interests.
