HDEV 200 Lecture 2: 2.1 Class
Document Summary
Ester thelen 1st person to suggest that dynamic systems can be used to understand human development. Originally came from math and physics, to understand how solar system moves around and thelen took it to apply to hd. Thelen mostly studied infant motor development, how babies learned to walk, prevailing notion was to have been reflex, but thelen showed it really occurs in dynamic system. Has to do w/ biology for sure, but they"ll stop taking stepping motion and they have to wait till muscles catch up if too fat. Neurological connections, proportions of bone, fat, and muscles. Complexity: not completely unpredictable, but makes it nonlinear change in one moment affects change in another moment and so on. Some cultures, babies are carried everywhere, in those cultures where they"re carried longer then they don"t develop until later on: ppl like babies contained, container baby culture affects motor development.
