Air mass not moving in either direction: same velocity as earth. Air mass moving away from the equator: faster than the earth beneath it and is deflected to the east. Air mass moving towards the equator: slower than the earth beneath it and deflected to the west. Prevailing winds are named from the direction they are coming. From. (going to the east, from the west = westerlies) As wind moves across the surface of the ocean, pushes the ocean.
