o The scientific study of interactions between organisms and their
environment

Ecologists strive to understand the biotic and abiotic forces that influence the
distribution and abundance of organisms
We have seasons because of earth’s tilt
Where the sun angle is low, it must pass through more of the Earth’s atmosphere
and more energy is absorbed and reflected before it reaches the ground
o Higher latitudes receive less solar energy than the equator
Solar energy=the main determinant of climate
o Amount of solar energy received depends on the angles of the sun’s rays
