CAS BI 107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Ernst Haeckel, Rain Shadow, Trade Winds
Lecture something…
• What is Ecology?
o The study of all those complex interactions referred to by Darwin as the
“conditions of those who struggle for existence”
o The scientific study of interactions between organisms and their
environment
o Founded by Ernest Haeckel
• Ecologists strive to understand the biotic and abiotic forces that influence the
distribution and abundance of organisms
• We have seasons because of earth’s tilt
• Where the sun angle is low, it must pass through more of the Earth’s atmosphere
and more energy is absorbed and reflected before it reaches the ground
o Higher latitudes receive less solar energy than the equator
• Solar energy=the main determinant of climate
o Amount of solar energy received depends on the angles of the sun’s rays
