Document Summary
Productivity in the ocean makes organic matter from inorganic carbon (inorganic carbon gets reduced to organic carbon) Carbon dissolves in water to make carbonic acid, bicarbonate, and carbonate. Most of the dissolved carbon in the ocean is bicarbonate. Atlantis was the historic ship that operated in woodshole. Alfred redfield did a lot of the research on this ship, he created the redfield ratio. ~redfield found that every you go in the ocean, the relationship between the amount of dissolved carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus was constant, and the ratio of this in the water was very similar to that of in the plankton. ~close relationship between carbon cycling, and the cycling of nitrogen and phosphorus. Bermuda-atlantic times series and hawaii-atlantis time series are the two main us measurements of nutrient profiling. ~below the thermocline, the nutrient concentration below it are pretty high and uniform. ~there is basically 0 nutrients in the surface ocean.
