Infancy- no difference between doing the right and wrong thing. Preschool- interests shift to rewards rather than punishment- effort is made to secure greatest benefit for oneself. School age- the good boy/girl level, effort is made to secure approval from others. School age- orientation towards fixed rules, purpose is to maintain social order as they seek approval from the entire society. Teens- mutual benefit, morally right and and legally right are not always the same. Adulthood- morality is based on principles that transcend mutual benefit. Ex. you might hate someone, but your superego is telling you that it is bad to hate someone so you switch and tell yourself that they hate you.
