Generally refers to joint pain or joint disease. Why women: arthritis is an autoimmune disease, which are more common in women. 54 million adults are diagnosed with adults in a year. In 2040, 78 million americans will have arthritis. 2/3 of adults between ages of 18-64 are working and have arthritis. It is one of the 5 more costly diseases amongst adults. Combined medical costs and earning loss = 304 billion dollars in the us. 164 billion dollars in earning loss (people who could not work) 2011: 1,269 million knee and hip replacements. Hip replacement: 27 billion dollars per year in america. If we can gure out how to impact this disease, it will be a huge bene t for our healthcare costs. Comorbidities, connections are not quite clear but people who have arthritis are older and have weight problems (so there is a causal disease but not direct disease):
