SAR SH 522 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Basal Ganglia, Internal Capsule, Lateral Ventricles
Document Summary
Circulation of csf can become disordered for a number of reasons. This results in hydrocephalus or water in the brain. The three symptoms are wobbly, wet and weird. It is diagnosed by performing a spinal tap. It is very dangerous not to treat this it can cause pressure on the brain and eventually cell death. Subcortical structures: the structures that are really hard to see, deep inside of the brain and lower down. These include: basal ganglia, hippocampus, thalamus and the hypothalamus. Control of background movement and initiation of movement patterns. Three major structures of the basal ganglia: Caudate medial to the internal capsule. Head protrudes into the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle. Attaches to and re ect back onto the caudate. The basil ganglia technically is only comprised of those three structures above. However, there are other structures connected to it which communicate with each other: Amygdala involved in processing emotions and fear response.
