A society"s rules and expectations of right and wrong behavior. In other words: shared guidelines that define how people should act in social occasions. Useful instructions on how to live in a society: ex: greetings (japanese bow) Agreement that people must conform to standards of behavior: handshake, wave, smile, waving at someone doesn"t mean 5 of something. People judge behaviors of others according to conformity with these shared standards. Negative reaction toward repeated violators: one time=mistake, more than one= bad reactions. Formal rules issued by official leaders: different from norm, texting and driving: law, leaving shopping cart in parking lot: norm. Formal sanctions (fines, confiscation, prison: given by appointed officials. Informal sanctions (ridicule, shun: everyone can issue. Means used to enforce respect of the laws and norms in a society: positive (rewards, negative (punishments) Wearing a pink tuxedo in class: raised eyebrows. Shoplifting: large fine or short prison term. Homicide: life in prison or death.
