Warning coloration becomes a burden when there"s no venomous snake to protect. Strong positive selection (selection for a particular allele) for this colouration is beneficial in the presence of the coral snake. But as you move upward, there are no coral snakes- so there are no predators used to encountering this snake so the bright coloration will give them away.
