PHL 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Maximilien Robespierre
Document Summary
Humans naturally want to invent tools, build huts, live and hunt in groups. Hunting in groups allows you to kill a bigger animal, you get more food. With new free time, leisure becomes our first yoke. We become slaves to leisure; people begin to become ashamed if they are not at the top of social heirarchy. Negative emotions begin; vanity, hatred, shame, envy. Property creates inequality of stuff and power. The first man who, having enclosed a peice of the ground, bethought himself of saying this is mine, and found people simple enough to believe him, was the real founder of civil society. Wealthy leverage their wealth to become even wealthier. If you are poor, you have nothing to build wealth with. War between the wealthy and the poor. The wealthy trick the poor into creating government. Does nothing for the rest of us. If hobbes is right, the best form of government is absolute dictatorship locke.
