PSY 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Working Memory, Phonological Awareness, Whole Language
Document Summary
In general, older kids solve problems more often and more effectively (siegler"s study) Kids fail to solve problems because they don"t take in the necessary information properly. They have an incomplete or incorrect encoding process, which is when we take information from the problem and put it into a mental representation, so they are less likely to solve the problem. Kids fail to solve problems because they don"t plan ahead. Kids don"t always realize they need a plan, they think planning is too much effort, believe others will solve problem/plan for them. To solve a problem usually depends on specific knowledge and general knowledge. Kids use general strategies to solve problems and ones specific to a task. Means-ends analysis: determine difference between current and desired situations then doing something to reduce difference. This usually leads to a sub-goal to help get to the larger goal. Young kids are only good at this if the difference is small.
