DANC 150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Contemporary Ballet, Classical Ballet, Concert Dance
Document Summary
Artistry is the combination of technique and expression. Spectacle is just stuff to draw attention, not artistry. Anything that extends from the body without taking on weight. Prevalent in classical ballet, religious dance, and contemporary ballet. Stage set in front of people sitting on raised floors. Music is high pitched and almost sounds like divinity. Dancers have specific spots and specific ways to get to them. Walking to the center then to starting position. Slow, large movements with hand and foot gestures. Motions are tied to accompaniment and very repetitive. This dance is a slow processional that was popular in the late renaissance into the early baroque period. Stepping in time, also with specific entrance procedure. Notice how the corsets showcase refinement and restrict movement of the upper body. Not very controlled, they seem to be almost immature. Arms are loose, no specific positioning like in a typical ballet. The minuet is characterized by the couples-against-couples configuration.
