Virtually no validity- merely diagnosed off of observation. Psychoanalytic theory drove diagnoses as an explanation for the development of mental illnesses. Phillip ash (1949) prototypical study of need to categorize symptoms to benefit classification (cia) but this took until the 60s and 70s to gain more traction. Stengel- 1959 discovered that almost every country in the world had its own classification system. Very similar to icd-8, but icd-8 included no descriptions, just diagnostic terms. Did include wastebasket" categories- we now refer to these as not otherwise specified" or nos. Wanted to help outpatient mental health efforts- anxiety disorders, depressive, personality and childhood/adolescent disorders are better defined.
