We think it absolutely necessary that schools should be established in which the young can be taught the principles of faith and morals, while being instructed in letters (ravitch) 1834- a proposal to the public school society by the catholics. Growth in free school society schools (nonreligious) By 1840, did not go to school, went to free schools, and were private (religious) schools. 1841 school reform: new law abolished the small and elite group that controlled the public school society but also refused public support of catholic schools. Free school society renamed new york city public schools . 1825 - common council passed an ordinance to deny common school funds to any religious society. 1826 - state legislature granted the free school society a new charter and a new name: public school system. 1920-1950s: leisure activities introduced to high schools.
