The pope crowned charlemagne in order to strengthen the autonomy of the western church vs. Charlemagne used this coronation in order to call himself the protector of the church. Charlemagne saw himself as rex et sacerdos> king and priest. Carolingian renaissance> charlemagne"s effort to promote, reform and harmonize education, monastic life liturgy and church organization throughout the empire.
