Document Summary

The irish renaissance: the recovery of the irish past, poets and translators: james clarence mangan and samuel ferguson, edith somerville and violet martin (somerville & ross), some experiences of an. Imhof, r diger (2002), a short history of irish literature, stuttgart: klett, 61. The irish renaissance may be looked upon as a relatively homogeneous litero-cultural period. We date it generally from 1890 to 1920/21, in the certain knowledge that all period dating is a matter of convenience more than anything else. Its beginning coincides with certain cultural substitution processes which resulted from the political disillusionment after the fall of parnell (1890) as well as from the foundering of all endeavours to attain home rule and the political unification of ireland. The failure of the political efforts generated a sense of embitterment, and this in turn led to an intensification of attempts to achieve an irish cultural identity. The end of the irish renaissance was again determined by political events.
