Judges: magistrate courts, felony trial courts. Pre-arrest investigation: criminal adjudication process usually begins when there has been a report of a criminal act. Police arrive at scene and have to determine what crime occurred. Or, the state may have reason to believe that a crime will be committed in the near future. Probable case = a reasonable belief that a crime is being committed or is in the process of being committed. **there must be probable cause to believe a person committed a crime** Arrest allows a search of the arrestee"s person to uncover more evidence.
