ANTH 010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Aryan Race, Cultural Relativism, Relativism
Document Summary
Idea that the recognition of differences is never value neutral. Within a culture, you do get signals and messages that instill preconceived notions (prejudices/expectations) of people, whether you are conscious about it or not. Ex) the jew"s foot, racism in the u. s. Looking at another culture through your own cultural lens and seeing it as inferior; cultural bias; seeing your own culture as right and normal and things about other cultures as deficiencies or not normal. Tendency to assign value mine is right, theirs is wrong. Scientific study of race; usually is always biased. Not a respected approach to science anymore. Cultures should be able to represent themselves the way they want to be represented; there should be no authoritative voice on a culture. Franz boas - came up with this idea; know him for quiz. The right of refusal; to have the ability to say yes or no to something. Recognized that there are always power dynamics at play.
