Picturesque setting despite lack of infrastructure: favela is leisurely (drugs, dancing, beach/ soccer); yet many work 3-4 jobs, stereotypes of poor people as lazy, blackness as cultural creativity, but not other kinds of productivity/ intelligence. Favela as site for outsiders and traffickers to gain capital. Gained financial capital and cultural capital because he performed in a really dangerous area. Commodification: foundations of representational violence and structural violence. Favela (dona marta) a colorful backdrop for other commodities ex. Such actions reinforce favela s brand (favela inc. ) through wide (global) circulation. Favela bodies are also commodified via fashion, e. g. story about son of bricklayer assistant who became a model after police discovered his father. Young man"s photo portfolio included serious, grief-stricken poses. Difficult for favela residents to escape tropes/ realities of crime, lost childhood, and state violence.
