BIOL 030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: Simple Columnar Epithelium, Lamina Propria, Capillary
Document Summary
Circular folds = help increase surface area and act like speed bumps to slow things; are parallel. Jejunum about 7 ft long; where most digestion and absorption occurs. Ends at iliocecal valve in large intestine, cecum of small instestine. Important for absorption of amino acids to go across cell membrane to go to capillary bed. Carbs (go to capillary bed), proteins (go to capillary bed), and fats (enter lacteal) In lamina propria, have lymphatic nodule = immune system function. Goblet cells produce mucus as acidic chime enters duodenum. Microvilli undulating apical surface for simple columnar cell. Increases surface area for greater absorption and secretion in small intestine. Duodenum additional cells (submucosal cells) along with goblet cells create mucous to deal with acid from stomach. Large intestine is about 5 ft in length and larger diameter than small intestine. Whatever enters cecum is undigested and unabsorbed from small intestine (where most of absorption/digestion took place)
