Document Summary
The pns is composed of all the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. The pns contains spinal nerves and cranial nerves. The pns can be divided into sensory and motor divisions. The motor division consists of somatic and automatic pathways. Somatic means under consciousness or voluntary control. Autonomic means under unconscious or involuntary control. Emerge in pairs from the brain and brainstem instead of the spinal cord. There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves. Some cranial nerves carry only sensory information or only motor information, while others carry both sensory and motor information. The cranial nerves are numbered using roman numerals, and can be referred to by their number or name. Function: sensory: parasympathetic innervation to constrict pupil, motor: movement of the eye, note: cn iii is one of three cranial nerves that supplies motor movement to the muscles of the eye. Function: sensory: forehead, eye, upper jaw, lower jaw, motor: muscles of mastication.
