Dialogic communication- sharing of ideas and open discussion through words. Monologue- impose what we think on another person. Active listening- focused, purposeful listening: listening distractions. Listening distractions- anything that competes for attention that you are trying to give something else. Distractions can originate outside of us- environment (external dis. ) or within us- thoughts and feelings (internal dis) External distractions: anything in the environment- noise, movement, light, darkness, heat or cold, minimize external dis- anticipate and plan for them. Internal distractions: thoughts and feelings, both positive and negative that intrude on our attention, daydreaming, anxiety due to time pressures, distress over an argument, fatigue owing to lack of sleep or illness, scriptwriting and defensive listening. Defensive listening- decide that they won"t like what the speaker is going to say or that they know better. Occurs when listeners sense that their attitudes or opinions are being challenged.
