The one who coined the word philosophy . First thinker to call philosophy a distinct approach with its own subject and method. Distinction he made between the realm of the eternal, never changing ideal forms and the realm of the ever-changing material reality (we perceive) We perceive nothing but the shadows of the objects. The soul and the body are two distinct and radically different kinds of entity. The soul was the entity that defined a person, it was immortal and made of left- overs of the cosmos-soul. The soul had knowledge of the perfect realm, humans could get access to the true ideas. inward part of reasoning leads to knowledge. Most prestigious knowledge was mathematical and geometrical knowledge. Emphasis much more on the role of observation. Practical knowledge: how men ought to act in various circumstances (politic) Theoretical knowledge starts with axioms throught: natural sciences (psychology etc , theology (astronomy etc ) Axioms: self evident truths about nature acquire.
