The automated detection system relies on a series of solar-powered acoustic-flow monitor (afm) stations installed in river valleys that are subject to frequent lahars. While typical seismometers are sometimes able to capture ground-shaking signals caused by lahars, afms are designed specifically to detect ground vibration from a lahar. The receivers record vertical and horizontal position, and by comparing these measurements through time, it is possible to determine the amount of movement for a specific location on the surface of the earth. Attempted to deflect lava flows from populated areas: methods such as bombing, hydraulic chilling, and wall construction. Bombing is the most effective against lava flows; and its purpose is to block the channel and cause the lava to pule up and break though upstream, where it will take a less damaging route. Unlike other hazards, structural controls are not often employed in reducing the volcano hazard, primarily because of the magnitude of destruction resulting from an eruption.
