Former soviet union is part of eu. Was the third largest country in the world some 20 years ago. With the breakup if the soviet union there was a lot of movement. Over the last 24 years there has been a slow reconstruction. Russian federation is the largest territory- crosses 9 time zones. Annexation of crimea in the black sea- firmly russian control. Arrested in 2003- treied and imprisoned- released at the end of 2013. Water rich area but not a lot of agricultural land. Neither taiga nor tundra, which makes up 80% of the territory, is not suitable for farming/agricultural production. The steppe is a natural grasslands which is ideal for growing wheat. Agricultural wedge is in the western part of this region. Most people live west of the ural mountains. Political instability is definitely a factor- people leaving. People are also just not having as many kids. Psychological weight of having your country disappear before your eyes.
