Why the visual?
● A picture can tell stories that connect to a broader narratives about culture our values,
and society as a whole
● We should go beyond the surface of the image to understand other elements of how it
was created and received
● Composition: “the creative activity of placing objects within a frame.”
Composition
● Composition is not just about making a beautiful picture but about achieving
“maximally effective communication”
● Certain elements play a role in how images are created
● Choices about these elements allow viewers to understand certain kinds of meanings
Color
● Color choices have a significant impact on images and how we respond to them.
● Biologically we are prescribed to get attention to the colors for photographers
● Red is a key color for photographers
● Advisors also recognize the power of color
● The power of red
o Red is also often used in company logos and signage
o The use of red in an ad or a magazine cover can draw your attention to certain
parts of a page design or message
▪ Different colors are different emotions
Form
● Form=the object within the frame how big it is and where its placed
● The placement of the object within the frame can have different effects on viewers
● Adds drama or tension to an image
● The “rule of thirds”
o Break an image into a grid of three and put the object in the intersection of the
lines of the grid
● Breaking the rule
Line
● Horizontal lines= calm and stability
● Vertical lines =energy and upward thrust
● Diagonal lines are dynamic and unstable and help illustrate complicated ideas or
depth
● Lines help us understand better recognize and understand agreements or relationships
in an image
Angels
● Lines are also connected to the angel at which the photo is takes
● The more extreme the angel the more intense the feeling of depth of an image.
