Standards of good journalism for broadcast stories are not different from print or online. You"re writing for the ear, not the eye. Someone else may have to read your script live and aloud. Available time is much, much, much less. No: the council voted monday to raise water rates . Yes: residents (or you ) will pay 3 percent more for water . Lead: focused on angle happening now: no: two people were shot saturday night , yes: two people are recovering today (or police are looking ) Simple, conversational language; active voice, not passive. No direct quotes (unless a sound bite), only indirect (paraphrase) Attribution comes first in paraphrase ( mayor john smith said ) Focus on next step or future action. Broadcast stories are much shorter than print or online. A typical 30-minute tv broadcast has only 14 minutes of news. A lead story or package lasts 1-2 minutes.
