Personality is relatively stable ! personality in class is different than in a party. Bring repressed feelings to conscious level so they can deal with appropriate. Believed that our personality is the result of some unconscious urge or instinct, usually sexual or aggressive in nature. They are unconscious they might come out in another form: dreaming, mental illness, slip of the tongue. Experiment try to induce freudian slips in male subjects- had to finish innocent looking sentences. Men in the presence of females wrote sexual words. Most modern day psychologists have different explanation! How personality is structured they are probably not true desires. Personality is formed around 3 structures id (operates according to pleasure principle), ego (operates according to reality principle), and superego. Operates according to pleasure principle- tries to obtain immediate pleasure and avoid pain. (just id and ego would be selfish)
