The specific identities that people try to present may vary from one person and situation to another. However, two strategic self-presentation goals are very common. The first is ingratiation, a term used to describe acts that are motivated by the desire to get along with others and be liked. The other is self-promotion, a term used to describe acts that are motivated by a desire to get ahead and gain respect for one"s competence ingratiation tactics need to be subtle or else they will backfire. People also do not like those who relentlessly trumpet and brag about their own achievements.
