Princeton good samaritan seminary experiment (varying urgency to get to next building to give sermon, coming across confederate in need of help) (latane) experiment scenario: smoke pours into the room as participants complete a survey. The participants are either alone, in groups of three, or with2 other passive confederates. When alone people are more likely to report smoke, in a group the likelihood drops significantly, and if you"re amongst the confederates who were told to do nothing you will also do nothing. Informational influence: we watch behavior of others to help us define ambiguous situations. Pluralistic ignorance: amid passive bystanders, each person assumes others are not acting because they see situation as non-emergency. Experiment where only one participant is real and everyone else is a confederate.
