Psychophysiology: concerned with bodily changes that accompany psychological events or that are associated with a persons psychological characteristics. Ex. heart rate, tensions in muscles, blood ow. The activities of the autonomic nervous system are frequently assessed by electrical and chemical measurements in an attempt to understand the nature of emotion. Each heartbeat generates spreading changes in electrical potential, which can be recorded by an electrocardiograph or on a suitably tuned polygraph. Electrodes are usually placed on the chest and lead to an instrument for measuring electric currents. De ections of this instrument may be seen as waves on a computer screen. Increase activity in the sns which then boosts sweat gland activity. Current problems in functioning are typically the long-term product of personal vulnerabilities and life experiences. It is essential for professionals to be able to communicate accurately with one another about the types of cases they are treating or studying.
