How does friction at the surface impact surface low and high pressure systems: friction at the surface causes flow into a low pressure system. This is called convergence and causes a rising vertical motion: friction at the surface causes flow out of a high pressure system. This is called divergence and causes sinking vertical motion. Convergence: an atmospheric condition that exists when the winds cause a horizontal net inflow of air into a specified region. Convergence adds mass to a column of air.
