○ Criminal justice system is a formal crime control approach
■ Controlling crime is not solely the responsibility of this system
○ Other institutions of crime control (sets examples which control our behavior)

○ Why should these institutions matter to the criminal justice system?
■ People who end up in the system were failed by the informal systems that
preceded it
● Criminal Justice Operations
○ Two justice systems- national and state
■ Federalism
● Power division between national and state governments
○ Most people break state criminal laws vs. federal criminal laws
■ Except drug offenses
○ Expansions of federal involvement
■ Expansion has been rapidly increasing since the 1960s
● 9/11 brought about the most significant expansion

● Criminal Justice System
○ What is a system?
■ A complex whole made up of interdependent parts
● interdependent parts: independent with their private goals but
depend on one another
○ What are the three subsystems?
■ Police
● Frontline in controlling crime
● Four major duties
○ Keep the peace
○ Apprehend violators
○ Prevent crime
○ Provide social services
■ Courts
● Main function is adjudication
○ Determine if the defendant is guilty
● Dual court system
○ National (federal) system and state systems
■ Corrections
● Nearly 7 million adults in supervision
● Less than 30% in prison and jail
