Document Summary

Hegemony - those who are politically and economically in power, controls the narrative/story. To change society, it"s not just overthrowing the people in power. Changing the way people think, the symbols, the ideas. Like seth, how he represents the farmworkers is very important to us. How does he write about it to help them. Have to be aware that the words/action as a writer/anthropologist have impacts to the people ones writing about. Medicalization stops seeing patients as people, which takes away all the underlying issues occurring. It is a shared sense of identity based on a distinct cultural heritage and common geographical origin. This is more of an asserted identity - instead of an objective identity. May include religion and language, but not necessarily. An assertion of group identity, a way of drawing boundaries. Historically, it was synonyms with the term ethnic group. It was used to describe a group of people with a common shared language, territory/tribe.
