ANTHR-130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Cousin Marriage, Nuclear Family, Unilineality
Document Summary
19: note: only one side has cousin. Family- a married couple or other group of adult kinfolk who cooperate economically and in the upbringing of children, all or most of whom share a common dwelling: household- group of people occupying common dwelling. Families typically share household but not always and you have people who share household but are not families (room mates): anthropologically a household needed a male (father or brother). Adults die and leave children behind: these children are left to fend for themselves- older child takes care of your children and constitute a family. Marriage- socially recognized union between 2 or more adults. This is the preferred form of marriage in 84% of societies. Takes place in societies where you have more women than men. Warfare societies/frontier where a lot of men die. Also where rapid family growth is desired because 1 man can make several women pregnant.
