Born into a family of modest means; went to work at 14 with little formal education; moved from one job to the next. 1858: wallace sent darwin another paper on the tendency of varieties to depart indefinitely from the original type . Here, described evolution as a process driven by competition and natural selection. Darwin then feared that wallace might get credit for a theory (natural selection) that he developed. The papers received little notice at the time but when darwin released on the origin of species in dec 1859, the storm broke and still hasn"t abated. Public opinion was negative, but there was much scholarly praise for the book; sci opinion gradually came to darwin"s support. Species were mutable, not fixed; evolved from other species through the mechanism of natural selection. Darwin realized that natural selection was the key to evolution. With the help of malthus" ideas, he saw how it could be explained.
